Source: Wikipedia

Shirley MacLaine (born April 24, 1934) is an American film and theater actress, dancer, activist, and author. She has written a large number of autobiographical works, many dealing with her spiritual beliefs as well as her Hollywood career. MacLaine's early childhood dream was to be a ballerina. Strongly motivated by ballet throughout her youth, she never missed a class. Eventually, MacLaine decided that professional ballet was not for her, so after high school she went to New York to try acting on Broadway. Within a year, MacLaine became the understudy to actress Carol Haney in The Pajama Game. When Haney broke her ankle, MacLaine replaced her, and a few months later, with Haney still out of commission, film producer Hal B. Wallis took note of MacLaine's performance, and signed her to work for Paramount Pictures.

MacLaine made her debut in the Alfred Hitchcock film The Trouble with Harry (1955), which won her the Golden Globe Award for New Star Of The Year - Actress. MacLaine went on to give Oscar-nominated performances in Some Came Running (1958), The Apartment (1960), Irma la Douce (1963), The Turning Point (1977), Terms of Endearment (1963) (for which she one the Academy Award for Best Actress), and Madame Sousatzka(1988). To this day, she continues to star in major films and television programs.
