Ira Gershwin (December 6, 1896 – August 17, 1983) , the elder of the two brothers wrote the lyrics while his younger brother, George Gershwin (September 26, 1898 – July 11, 1937) composed the melodies.
The brothers wrote more than a dozen Broadway shows, featuring songs such as “I Got Rhythm”, “Embraceable You”, “The Man I Love” and “Someone to Watch Over Me”, and the great American opera Porgy and Bess.
