Paula Julie Abdul is an American pop singer, record producer, dancer, choreographer, actress and television personality. Beginning dance lessons at age 8, Abdul showed a natural talent for dance. Years later, during her first year at California State University at Northridge, she was selected from a pool of 700 candidates for the cheerleading squad of the Los Angeles Lakers NBA basketball team. Within three months, she became head choreographer. Six months later, she left the university to focus on her choreography & dancing career.
In the 1980s, Abdul was discovered by The Jacksons and was signed to do the choreography for the video to their single “Torture”. After the success of “Torture”, she became a sought-after choreographer, and soon rose as a Pop-R&B singer with a string of hits in the late 1980s and early 1990s. In 1991, she won a Grammy for “Best Music Video – Short Form” for “Opposites Attract.” In addition, she twice won the “Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Choreography.”
In the 2000s, she became a judge on the television series, American Idol.

AP - Simon Cowell predicted "The X Factor" would be a TV hit and eclipse his ex-employer, "American Idol." He was wrong, and now his show has been gutted of three of its five stars, including Paula Abdul, putting its future in question.
