Don Ameche was an Academy Award winning American actor who starred in over 70 films between 1935 and 1994. Following his success as a radio announcer and sketch participant on The Edgar Bergen/Charlie McCarthy Show in late 1930s, Ameche starred opposite Frances Langford in the radio comedy sketch series The Bickersons (1946-1951). In addition to his success in radio, Ameche was a prominent Broadway, film, and television actor. Between 1961 and 1965, he guest starred in many television series, including Jack Palance’s circus drama, The Greatest Show on Earth.
In the latter 1960s and early 1970s, Ameche directed the NBC television drama series Julia, starring Diahann Carroll. In 1983, Ameche and actor Ralph Bellamy were cast in John Landis’ Trading Places. The film was a great success, and both actors were praised for their comedic performances. Ameche’s next role, in Cocoon (1985), won him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He continued working for the rest of his life, including in the sequel, Cocoon: The Return. His last films were Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (1993) and Corrina, Corrina (1994).
